Swedenergy is a non-profit industry and special interest organisation for companies involved in the supply of electricity (production, distribution and trading). As the united voice of the Swedish power industry, the organisation monitors and promotes the interests of its members and the power industry in general. Another task is to serve as a centre for knowledge building and information sharing both within and outside the industry.
Day-to-day activities are conducted on direct behalf of the members in the organisation’s wholly owned service company, Svensk Energi – Swedenergy – AB. Swedenergy’s aim is to create optimal conditions for the members’ operations and a greater understanding of and knowledge about electrical energy and its important role in development of society.
A vision was adopted by Swedenergy's Board of Directors on 1 April 2009:
With electricity anything is possible
This vision is based on three cornerstones:
- We can build a sustainable society
- We create customer value
- We make the desirable attainable!
The organisation’s priorities for 2011 are:
- Increased customer benefit – greater confidence in the power industry – recent years’ improved confidence among customers and the public must continue. There is still a long way to go before reaching this goal.
- The key role of electricity in combating climate change – the future’s electricity generation must be increasingly climate-neutral and Swedish electricity generation must be given competitive conditions, not least from a tax perspective.
The phase-out of fossil energy usage in the non-ETS sector and replacement with electricity will aid Sweden in attaining its climate targets. The smart power grids of tomorrow can contribute to solving the climate problem.
- An efficient power system and a transparent electricity market in Sweden and Europe – the EU’s energy and climate package and Sweden’s own energy policy call for massive investments in climate-neutral power generation.
This will demand not only the scope to carry out such investments but also a power system in which it is possible to integrate a larger share of added renewable and “intermittent” electricity generation from a production, distribution and electricity market perspective. The European Commission’s proposed infrastructure package from November 2010 touches on these issues to a large degree.
- A holistic view of the energy market – many of the association’s members are active in areas that lie outside the electricity sector. The association’s activities should be characterized by an understanding of the big picture and a system perspective that extends across the entire energy industry.
- Industry recruitment – in 2011 the industry is in its third year of a special focus on recruitment . Efforts in the past two years have been carried out according to the action plan that was approved by the Board of Swedenergy in the autumn of 2008.
To a large extent the main objectives have been to regain lost ground from the past ten years, when educational and recruitment issues were given a temporarily lower priority, and lay a strong foundation for the future.
